Branding Yourself Online and 5 Things to Remember
You’ve decided you want to start branding yourself online in social media. Contending with content from celebrities (both real and reality), mega-brands, and politicians can be somewhat daunting when starting to create an online image. I’m sorry to tell you, but there is not a set formula for creating a “star” image online.
There are several ways to create an image online for yourself; Websites, blogs, social networking sites, online boutiques, and photo albums. Each of these has different venues within themselves.
- Who are you? – First, figure out what you are creating a presence for. If you could describe the image you want to create in one word what would it be? Do you want to be trustworthy, tough, safe, or smart? Any of these will work, but once you decide on the word, stick to it.
- Chose a Motto – Now, incorporate the word that you chose into your message or motto. This is a big step in the branding process. How do you want to say your message? Uber-professionalism, street slang, comically? It is best to choose one that fits with your vision of what you want your image to be, not what it is right this second.
- Plan – Once you have your word, and your message is consistent, you’re ready to make a plan. You cannot divide and conquer until your soldiers are trained. Strategy can be the hardest, and most often skipped, step in creating an online image.
- Research – Research will go a long way in figuring out the best venues for your message. Get thoroughly familiar with a number of sites to see which best fits your needs.
- Be Authentic – An essential aspect of creating an online presence is to be authentic. If you are passionate about your family, they are going to show up in your updates, stories, and/or tweets. This is okay. There is always a way to spin your story to still represent your brand.
Most people lose their momentum online and their virtual life dies. They stop updating, blogging, tweeting. They forget their message and brand. How do you continue building yourself?
You focus on the people that you are targeting. You build relationships. Just like in real life, they take time, dedication, and investments. Ask questions; be interested. Cultivate true relationships with people.
